Dreams are the succession of different images, emotions, sensations and ideas which usually occurs in a human brain when a person is going through different stages of their sleep. Some people dream more than other people. Some of us feel like we dream but when we wake up in the morning we don’t remember anything like it never happened. While some of us claim to not have any dreams when we sleep.
Why do we dream? The answer to this question i.e. what is the function and what is the content of dreams, is still unknown. However, they have been associated with different interests like science, philosophy and religion, throughout the history.
Why don’t you dream?
It cannot be said with a certainty that a person never dreams. Some people recall their dreams very rarely. If you are one of the people who forget their dreams very quickly or have trouble remembering them at all, there is nothing to worry about.
Science says that a person usually have 4 to 6 dreams in one night. However, they will mostly remember only the last one which they saw just before they woke up.
According to a study from 2019, dreams occur while a person goes through the rapid eye movement (REM) cycle of their sleep. The researchers further explained that human ability to make memories during this cycle is impaired. This must be the reason why we tend to forget our dreams.
People who miss out the rapid eye movement (REM) cycle at night might also miss out on having any dreams. This is why they claim to not have any dreams. Having a poor sleeping cycle can cause different health problems or can contribute in one.
What can be other reasons?
Different sleep disorders can also be a reason why a person cannot enter the REM cycle. These sleep disorders include insomnia, sleep apnea etc. Insomnia can be a contributing factor in increasing the risk for diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, anxiety and depression.
Other factors which may contribute in having no dreams/missing out on the REM cycle are;
- Medication side effects
If I don’t dream does it mean I don’t get any quality sleep?
Sleeping through the REM cycle is when you have dreams. If you miss out on this sleep cycle you are definitely missing out on having dreams. Lack of quality sleep can cause mental health issues to even get worse with time. Mental health issues can further cause sleep disorders. However, if you don’t have dreams but you do get a quality sleep there is nothing to worry.
Does it mean I have an underlying condition?
If you are getting a sound sleep but you don’t have any dream it is perfectly normal. However, if you are not getting a quality sleep and it has been a while, you should probably go see your doctor. This is because lack of sleep can lead a person to have a poor overall health.
If you don’t dream this does not mean that you have depression but if you notice other symptoms consult your doctor immediately. These symptoms can be;
- Appetite changes
- Loss of interest in things you once loved
- Desire of self-harm
- An overwhelming sadness
Getting a regular quality sleep is very important for human body to function properly. There are 11 major organs in human body. These organs will only work properly the next day if they have had enough rest for all the work they did the previous day. let us be kind to ourselves and our bodies. Happy living!
