“I wish we could put up some of the Christmas spirit in jars and open a jar of it every month.” – Harlan Miller
CHRISTMAS SEASON IS HERE! And it is the most awaited time of the year because of the holidays and the festivity. But! For someone who is so busy with work all year and have never had this much time to themselves, it can be stressful too.
Families and friends see each other after so long because of the busy lives we all have. This busy schedule often gives no time to all of us for the preparation of Christmas. Which we all so dearly want to be more special then it was last year.
So! Let me share some basic tips which can help you make your Christmas a little more meaningful. Follow these and trust me you’ll have a perfect Christmas!!
Begin with gratitude
Gratitude is the key that unlocks the happiness. Being content with what you have, gives you a feeling of gratefulness. This feeling can change your perspective over life and you will start feeling that happiness and satisfaction inside your heart. Appreciate the things and people you have around you and celebrate the ones you lost.
Make a list
Trust me LISTS ARE SUCH BLESSINGS! Whenever you are stuck on anything, whatever you cannot get done or whatever you think you will miss out on an occasion JUST GET THAT PEN AND PAPER AND JOT IT DOWN!
On events like Christmas write down everything in a list, from the gifts you have to buy, to the things you have to prepare for the event or even the music you want to play. Prepare a list for each of above and you will see how easy your life becomes!
Set a budget
Setting a budget is the foremost important task that one should get done before anything else. Set the whole budget you can spare. Then divide this budget further into sub categories like budget for food, for gifts, for decorations, for your own shopping etc.
Later when you start spending this budget, try and keep it as contained as possible and do not exceed the budget while buying stuff. This will give you some saving that you can utilize in any sort of emergency shopping that you ought to do later on the event.
Buy meaningful gifts
Put in your heart while buying gifts, not just your money. If something you bought is expensive, does not mean the other person actually needed it. Rather than buying fancy gifts, buy something that they need. Like Dumbledore needed socks but kept getting books instead!
“One can never have enough socks! Another Christmas has come and gone and I didn’t get a single pair. People will insist on giving me books.”- Harry Potter; Philosopher’s stone
Do not exceed your bracket while buying gifts, keep it simple yet special. For this you should keep an eye for what your loved ones need recently.
Do not leave anything for the last moment. Do all your preparations on due time. Specially, avoid last minute shopping. Just because you will have to go to a Christmas party empty handed does not mean you rush to the store and buy something just for the sake of buying. Instead of doing that, maybe give them a handmade card, invite them on a dinner etc.
Commit to limited events
We always get so many invitations for different Christmas parties from our social circle. Try and attend as less as you can. Only go to the very important ones which you cannot skip. Spare that time for your loved ones. Give yourself a break from the hustle that you have to go through all year long.
Enjoy the family gathering
Family is always not your blood relations. In most cases you have friends like family too. So, enjoy the company of these people close to your heart while these holidays last. Have a cup of coffee with your partner, listen to different Christmas carols with your friends, have hot chocolate on these cold winter nights with your siblings , open gifts with them, do all the gossips you have. Tell your parents how you are doing in life and ask them about their life too.
Let go of those extra expectations
Put the thought of a perfect Christmas away for a second! Find happiness in the warmth of the people you have around you. Take things slowly and while doing that enjoy the process. You will feel the burden lift off of your mind if you let go of all of those extra expectations about that perfect Christmas you see all over social media. Such a Christmas does not exist. A Christmas spent with love and gratitude in THE BEST TYPE OF CHRISTMAS!
Put up a Christmas tree with your family
Putting up a Christmas tree is one of the indications that the festivity has begun. Put up a Christmas tree with the help of your family. Buy decorations to put up on the tree and decorate it together. Also, you remember the gossip session? Do that while sitting around the tree! 🙂
A family baking party
This is one of the most fun things you can do! Get in the kitchen with your spouse/partner, your parents or your siblings and get that baking party going! Bake some pie or maybe some cookies. And remember! It does not matter how good or bad they taste, what matters is that you got to spend some quality time with your family.
One act of kindness a day
As Steiner Rice wrote;
“Peace on earth will come to stay, when we live Christmas every day.”
Christmas indeed is the time of the year which brings joy, warmth and peace to everyone. But some of us are less fortunate. Do not forget these people at these times. Be the reason of someone’s peace and do a single act of kindness a day. Such as, if you have elderly neighbors who have no one to spend their Christmas with, take some cookies and visit them for half an hour, might bring smile to their weary faces!
Write a love letter
Okay so, this is my favorite one! Where there is true love, there must be appreciation. Be it your friends or your family, show some appreciation. Tell them how much you love them and appreciate their existence. Write a handwritten love letter to your spouse/partner, your parents or your siblings and TELL THEM HOW MUCH THEY MEAN TO YOU!
For most of us, Christmas is the only time of the year when the whole family gathers around and finally has some quality time to spend with each other. This is the reason we want to make this event as meaningful as it can be. By using these lovely ways you will be able to add a little extra color to your Christmas. Have a good time everyone! Merry Christmas! 🙂
